About Comp Titles

I’m not a fan of the star, or percentage, system of rating media.

Some of my favorite movies have terrible reviews on rotten tomatoes. (Looking at you Movie 43.)

Art is inherently subjective. Although there may be similarities in the life experiences I’ve had with the life experiences of others, the truth is that we all perceive the world through individuals lenses. Not only are we separated in our perceptions of art by our life experiences, we are separated by the tactile ways that each of us interact with the world.

Case in point. I’m pretty tall. I literally see the world from a different perspective than my shorter counterparts. Concerts are awesome for me. Sorry guys. I promise not to wear tall hats.

Accordingly, I’m building this little corner of the internet to post “comp titles” (i.e. comparative titles) to showcase books and movies that are similar to other books and movies.

I remember watching Edward Scissorhands as a kid and immediately thinking, “More! I want to see more movies just like that!” but being unsuccessful finding anything until I watched Lady in the Water years later. The similarities? Soundtrack, storyline, a need for love.

More to follow.
